Summer is officially here! Our warm season vegetables are about to go crazy! For the past few weeks the summer crop harvest has trickled in one tomato here and a few squash there, but things are about to change. Okra, squash, eggplant, tomatoes and more will be abundant in the coming weeks and we are working hard to keep up with those demands. Everything is a bit tougher in the hot summer months. Just recently the farm received several inches of rain. That was a good thing, no doubt. However, the amount of work that rain produced was staggering. Of course the rain brought on a few vegetables for harvest but that was not all. The grass and weeds grew, and the insects that were dormant had a field day. We leaned into the tasks and fought our mini-battles with weeds, cucumber beetles and exhaustion and won! (for the moment at least). It occurred to us both that this is the point where most home gardeners throw in the towel. Whether is is a sudden rain storm, or a family decides to go out of town, a home garden can and usually does get out of control. What is left is a few “leggy” tomatoes and tons of weeds.
This is where having your own personal Farmer has it’s advantages. While you are at the lake, or just relaxing at home, we are diligently tending your garden plot. Making sure that your vegetables are delicious and chemical free. When you get back from the lake, beech or wherever, your produce will be delivered to your door.
While some gardeners and their gardens are experiencing the “Summertime Blues”, at Gigi’s Organic Gardens we are are expanding! Our goal of moving into organic fruit production is quickly becoming a reality. This weekend we will be planting our Blackberry and Blueberry plots along with adding a few more grape vines. So if your idea of fun is not weeding or fighting insects, give us a call and let Gigi’s do all the work. Check out our website at http://www.gigisorganic.com.
